Where Little Minds Grow Wild
A nature-based early learning community for children ages three to five, taking root in Northern Michigan. We're preparing to open our doors.
What we're growing
Outside, on purpose
The woods are the second classroom. Rain boots are part of the uniform, and the seasons set the curriculum: maple sap in March, tadpoles in May, a floor of leaves in October.
Small by design
A small group with the same steady grown-ups every day, so each child is known by name, by mood, and by whatever they are curious about this week.
The whole child
Learning and wellbeing under one roof. A child's feelings, friendships and confidence get the same attention as their letters and numbers.
A day, roughly
No two days match, but most of them look something like this.
- Morning
Boots on, circle up
The day starts outside under the pines, with a song and a look at the sky.
- Mid-morning
Mud kitchen, magnifying glasses
Digging, stirring, counting worms. The good sticks are kept.
- Midday
Stories and a rest
Lunch, a book in the reading nook, and a nap if the walk was long.
- Afternoon
The wander
The creek, the meadow or the mossy log, depending on who votes for what.
- Home time
Muddy, tired, full of it
Every child goes home with a story, and probably a rock.
Two sisters, one idea
Magic Moss Academy is being built by two sisters, a clinical social worker and a registered nurse, who believe early childhood should be spent mostly outdoors, often muddy, and always known by name.
